Karen earned her Master’s Degree from the University of Kansas with a clinical emphasis in Maternal-Child Nursing in 1988. She received her BSN from the University of Texas in San Antonio in 1977, and her initial nursing education from Trinity Lutheran Hospital in 1968. Karen came to Saint Luke’s to teach in 1982 with a strong clinical background in pediatric nursing. She has worked in a variety of pediatric settings and in many different roles including nursing administrator and clinical nurse specialist at Children’s Mercy Hospital. Among the courses Karen has taught are Nursing of Children and Families, Community Health Nursing, Professional Issues, Life Transitions, and an elective in Parenting. As an Adjunct Professor at Webster University she has taught classes in Health Education, Family Nursing and Community Nursing. Professional interests include managing pain in young children, caring for underserved children and families, and teaching effectiveness.
