Nursing students from Saint Luke’s College of Health Sciences spent their spring break providing clinical assistance to the impoverished people of the San Juan de la Maguana area of the Dominican Republic.

San Juan de la Maguana is home to 150,000 people and is located forty miles from the Haitian border.  Two young Dominican doctors founded the medical facility and opened the clinic doors in 1989 in one of the poorest areas of San Juan de la Maguana.

Each student utilized critical thinking skills and has returned with a clearer understanding of the holistic approach to nursing. Working with a doctor and several nurse practitioners, the nursing students were able to improve their assessment and diagnostic skills in barrio clinics and providing school screenings for the local children each day.  The nursing students saw over 2000 people in the schools and clinics while immersing themselves in the culture during a flag raising ceremony at one of the local schools, a Fiesta celebration, a trip to the local market and a baseball game with Dominican families.
