29 Students and 3 Faculty Members Attend the 2011 Missouri Nurses Association Nurse Advocacy Day
29 students along with Mary Wishall, RN, MSN, Instructor,; Deborah Negus RN, BSN, Clinical Adjunct Faculty; and Lucy Hood, RN, PhD, Professor attended the 2011 MONA Nurse Advocacy Day at the Capitol Plaza Hotel on Feb. 22, 2011.
Lobbying efforts were focused on the following issues:
- HB 652 that would expand the scope of criminal penalties to persons who assault health care workers and these assaults would considered a Class A felony in the first degree.
- HB 272 that would modify the membership of the MO HealthNet Oversight Committee by adding a licensed registered nurse
- HB 223 & SB 191 which would use nursing licensure fees for the creation of a program that would provide grant funding for use in educating nurse faculty at the doctoral level and hire more nursing faculty in accredited programs offering a 4-year nursing degree
- HB 347 The Prompt Credentialing Act that would reqire that health carriers to credential health care professionals within 60 calendar days of receiving a completed application from a health care professional.
Jennifer Mayekawa spoke on behalf of Saint Luke’s College of Health Sciences students who attended the program. She specified that students gained an increased understanding and awareness of the political process and how the legislation directly affects professional nursing practice. The 2012 Nurse Advocacy Day is scheduled for Wednesday, February 22, 2012.
